Meet, Greet and Eat with us on July 19th
Hey Leaguers,
We know we've been MIA the last few months, but rest assured, we
haven't gone anywhere. We've been deep in strategic planning mode,
evaluating the great work you all helped us accomplish last election
cycle, compiling the issue concerns that were identified by young
people here in the Twin Cities, and watching the political landscape
locally and federally.
Last election young people rocked it; we were excited about the
election on a national scale - and you all were part of that
"youthquake." While the surge made our impact difficult to measure, we
did see some significant impact down ballot…about 2,766 people worth of impact.
We're going to focus on policy in a major way this coming year. After
mulling over multiple ideas, checking and re-checking the pledges and
issues you all identified, we've decided to narrow our focus to Green
Jobs (tying in a combination of the top 5 issues League members
identified) and here's why:
- It's a major issue in our country - look at the Obama administration's remarks about it. Those same conversations and buzz are happening here in MN on a local level.
- Many people are trying to weigh in on the issue here in the Twin Cities, but not many of their voices are being heard, especially our community leaders. Only our local leaders can make informed decisions about living/family wages with benefits, pathways out of poverty through advancement opportunities, making sure these jobs are placed and filled with people in the community, public transportation & food systems, sustainability for the environment and the people, the right to organize (unionize), etc.
- There's a lot of community traction around this issue, from the well know EJAM (Environment Justice Advocates of Minnesota) to the HIRE Campaign - and we need to coordinate & solidify our efforts and messages to ensure that our communities voices are heard and taken seriously in this conversation.
We
want to be VERY CLEAR: This DOES NOT mean we are through with the other
conversations or concerns that you all brought forth this past election
cycle. We are still going to be actively involved in those
conversations and campaigns and will keep you posted on the progress on
those fronts as well.
We want to make sure that we're on the right track! Are these
legitimate issues for you? Are we missing something that should be
brought forth? Do you have comments, questions, or concerns? Please
voice them, write back to online-tc@theleague.com and make them known.
Here's how you can be involved right now:
Meet, Greet, and Eat (bring a dish to share): Sunday, July 19th, 5-8pm
*no stress, no business, just time to chill-relax with fellow Leaguers*
Powderhorn Park
By the way, If we haven't told you already: Thank you, Thank you, Thank
you to ALL the volunteers that came out with us during the election. We
handed out over 20,000 endorsement slates and we couldn't have done it
without your help, willingness and support!
