Communique 1
Love and respect to all our brothers and sisters in the struggle. The ground assault is on, the League St. Louis is pounding the pavement registering voters across the St. Louis City and County.
Teaming up with community groups and the student government, leaguers helped register young voters at St. Louis Community College @ Forest Park. Tabling at local farmers markets and alternative economy malls, league members inform the people and remind them that the power to make change, comes from Our Unity. LYV-STL's next stop is the Earth Day Celebration in Forest Park. With activities planned for almost all the weekends this summer, now is the time to 'get involved', and volunteer with the League STL.
In other political work, the League has had and on going presence on 'the loop' in University City. Our Field Ops Coordinator, Bradly, has been collecting signatures to STOP THE ABUSE OF EMINENT DOMAIN. Along with a continuous stream of incoming V.R.s, Brad is reppin the League, almost everyday on one of the top 10 walking streets in the country. Big Ups Brad! In recent election news, the League STL and angry residents in Valley Park, Mo, have ousted crazed, racist, and sexist mayor Jeffery Whiteaker.(google his name and the River Front Times, to see why) Along with sending a clear message to all those who use the politics of fear to control.
This election serves notice to everyone that CHANGE isn't just a media buzzword. Though overall objective complete, the League STL regrets to report that the candidate we worked very closely with, Martha C. Rodriguez, lost by 30 votes. Working with only a week left in the campaign, LYV-STL organized, raised funds for, and provided the volunteers for a final GOTV phone bank.
On election Day LYV-STL also did polling place presence for Martha. 'We did the best we could, on short notice.' said LYV-STL Treasurer Ean Ramsey. Martha would have been the first hispanic elected alderman of Valley Park. The League STL Crew wants to send a BIG UPS! to Martha and all progressive women seeking office across the globe. Keep your heads up even in times of defeat, for there are more of us working to bring sane and balanced governance, everyday.
In LYV-STL infrastructure news. While at the 'Dream Reborn Conference, STL Co-Director Frank, met with League Of Young Voters National Staff including our new Executive Director Beko Baker. Strengthening the relationship between STL Branch and National was the main topic. Clear headway was made. While back at 'rebel HQ' Director of IT, Jenna Zeisler has designed our new myspace page and is ready to integrate it with the national site. Jenna is eagerly awaiting the arrival of our new computer, and a stepping up of our Internet Activities (IA).
