Youth wins political contest

Pittsburgh Courier Online October 30, 2008

A local 12-year-old Hill District resident won a political contest hosted by the Pennsylvania League of Young Voters.

Janel Ganaway won the “Unlock the Vote” poster contest with her design that featured handprints in purple, black and green and the saying “More People =More Power” painted in the middle.

“The best way to create lifelong civic engagement is to start before they turn 18. This contest was part of our program to reach out to young future voters and get them excited about participating in the process,” Elizabeth Rincon, executive state director of the league, said in a press release. “These posters also remind voters that they have the important responsibility of voting for the next generation, not yet old enough to speak for themselves.”

The Unlock the Vote campaign is geared toward inmates and ex-offenders and encourages them to register to vote.

Ganaway’s poster was selected out of 15 entries received from students in the Mission Discovery program and the MGR foundations after-school program. Individuals at the league’s final Presidential Debate Watch Party that took place at the Shadow Lounge, in East Liberty, selected the winning poster. The design was printed in 1,000 full color posters that will be placed through the city and surrounding neighborhoods.
