Justin Alfond, former head of the League of Young Voters, won Tuesday's three-way race for the Democratic nomination in Senate District 8, according to unofficial results from the Portland city clerk.

Alfond, a real estate developer, got 1,966 votes (45 percent); state Rep. Anne Rand, a former state senator and a business owner, got 1,618 (37 percent); and Clifford Ginn, a lawyer and board president of Opportunity Maine, got 771 (18 percent).

Alfond will face Republican Eric Lusk and Green Independent Kevin Gardella in November. The seat, which represents part of Portland, is now held by Democrat Ethan Strimling, who ran for Congress.

Alfond, 33, said he supports universal health care and would work to develop a sustainable economy to keep Maine's brightest residents here. He also supports investment in public schools and the state's infrastructure, such as roads, telecommunications and mass transit, to move people and goods more efficiently.
