A 'Facebook Primary'

The Chronicle of Higher Education January 03, 2008

The League of Young Voters and MoveOn.org Political Action are kicking off a “Facebook Primary” that aims to solicit and highlight the political views of young voters, including current and recent college students.

Through an application the groups developed for use on the online social networking site, which is popular among youth, Facebook users can vote for a candidate, state their reasons for their selection, and indicate which issues concern them most. (The application lists 11 topics, including education, from which users can choose.)

The primary application will allow one vote per Facebook account and will only count the votes of users under the age of 35, according to the Web site techpresident.com. Voting will be open until February 5, when 22 states are scheduled to hold their presidential primaries.

The results will be able to be viewed by any category of Facebook network, such as by the colleges users say they attend.

Techpresident provides this summary of the Facebook effort today. It includes comments from Sam Dorman, national director of online programs for the League of Young Voters, and Eli Pariser, executive director of MoveOn.org Political Action.
