League Family-
I have huge news.
After an extensive eight month search, we have a new Executive Director: Robert "Biko" Baker.
Sometimes the best leaders are right under our noses. Biko has been with the League since 2003. He came up through the ranks from Local Organizer to State Director to National Organizing Director and member of our executive team. Everyone is thrilled. We just wrapped up the best staff retreat we have had in our five years as an organization, and we were literally celebrating in the middle of it.
Biko is an incredible leader. He intimately understands every aspect of the League's work -- from the streets to the board rooms. He's a manager and a team builder; a moral leader who leads by example; he has a rare ability to build trust across divides. And he understands the numbers-driven science of organizing. In short, he's the whole package. It's already clear to me that Biko is going to be an amazing Executive Director. He's a natural.
Check out this quick youtube video to meet Biko for yourself.
When I started the League back in 2003, my greatest dream was to build a powerful national youth organization and leave it in good hands. Today, my dream has come true.
And it's not just Biko. It's his leadership team: Sam Dorman has stepped up as Managing Director. Heather Box as Development Director. Khari Mosley as Field Director. Lee Schaeffer as Operations Director. They are an extremely strong and talented team. As for me, I will stay very involved, but I will transition out of a staff role in the coming months.
The League is going to kick ass in 2008 like never before...
I am so proud of all of us. Our Board, our volunteers, our donors, and our staff. We have a dream team. It's the perfect time for me to move on, and pass the torch to the next generation. I love them and will miss them dearly.
I will miss you too, gentle Leaguer -- it's been five years so I feel like we've developed a little relationship.
As a parting request, I have one favor to ask:
Support Biko.
