Job Description
Communications/Community Organizer
DEADLINE TO APPLY:  JUNE 25, 2010

The League of Young Voters, the League of Young Voters Education Fund, and the League of Young Voters Maine PAC is looking for a dedicated, tech savvy, and passionate progressive to coordinate our media outreach and to help organize young people in their communities.

Our ideal candidate:

  • Is relentlessly optimistic
  • Can relate to people from all walks of life, races, religions, socio-economic backgrounds, ethnic backgrounds, genders, and sexual orientations
  • Is open-minded yet fiercely progressive
  • Can work under pressure and under deadline with smile
  • Can work well independently and in a group
  • Has an eye for detail
  • Is an artful delegator and a patient trainer
  • Is good at designing materials from scratch
  • Is skilled with design programs and has wicked good computer skills
  • Has excellent verbal and written skills 
  • Understands the importance of fundraising to the progressive movement
  • Has a vision for keeping us on the forefront of cutting edge media tactics
  • Is willing to be trained on skills s/he may not have

 

Duties include:
Communications Organizing (40% of time)

  • Drafting our communications plan (both old and new media)
  • Drafting our eBlast communications
  • Coordinating our social media outreach (our database, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc)
  • Coordinating volunteers to help do data entry
  • Conducting outreach to traditional media outlets , including drafting media advisories and releases, talking to reporters, scheduling editorial board meetings, and organizing media events
  • Conducting outreach on behalf of and/or in conjunction with the coalitions that the League is on the steering community of, including:
    • Maine Alliance for Sustainable Transportation (MaST)
    • Maine Citizens for Clean Elections (MCCE)
    • Engage Maine
    • Greendrinks
    • Updating our website

 

Community Organizing (40% of time)

 

    •  Organizing the League’s membership on behalf of issues of local and statewide importance
    • Volunteer recruitment
    • Helping to organize “hubs” of activists across Maine, with particular emphasis in Lewiston/Auburn, Waterville/Augusta, Bangor/Orono
    • Helping organize Greendrinks actions (4-5 hours a week)

  

Organizational Building (20% of time): TRAINING PROVIDED

 

    • Help with grant writing
    • Helping with major donor outreach, cultivation, and stewardship 
    • Helping with direct mail fundraising 
    • Helping organize events (both fundraiser and friendraisers)
    • Administrative duties, including keeping our records up to date
    • Keeping our databases up to date

  

Salary: approx. $30,000 year
