Sweet are the uses of adversity
Six for six. You read that right - 6 FOR 6! That was our tally for The League on Election Day. And, not only did we choose underdogs, but underdogs that became lightning rods. Adversity? You bet, but that which does not kill us .....
Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors.
When The League decided that it was time for change (and change is an UNDERSTATEMENT) on the Portland City Council and Portland School Committee, The League went full tilt boogie.
Yep - we were pissed off and, thanks to our work in the field and on the airwaves, we made sure that a majority of Portland voters understood why - and agreed with us.
Gloat, gloat, gloat! And you know what? WE HAVE EVERY REASON TO!
This is where we get a little serious ...
So, this is a good thing. Just about everyone knows that The League was the choo-choo that got Dan Skolnik his District 3 seat, and John Anton an at-large seat, the latter KOing an entrenched incumbent.
That wasn't easy. Anton - and The League - were the target of several nasty smear campaigns that forced level-headedness on our part. To boot, Skolnik was not the favored candidate among old-timers.
In the end, the League not only got ALL its candidates elected, but have well-earned throne at the head of the table.
As our captain, Justin Alfond, said last night: “Three years ago, there was no organization in Portland that actively engaged young people in the election process, and there wasn’t any organization advocating for the present and future of young people … and their concerns.
"The League of Young Voters, even in the face of strong adversity, knocked on thousands of doors, distributed thousands of voter guides, posted hundreds of posters, and worked tirelessly to ensure that our endorsed candidates were viable at the polls. We are extremely proud of the progress that we have made.
"The work of The League had an obvious and decisive role in this election process, and we are glad to be considered a force to be reckoned with.”
That's gale force, peeps ... and we have you to thank for it. You've outdone yourselves, and Portland will be a better place because you stepped it up, as you always do.
