The development review process provides a project review framework that is consistent and predictable and that ensures quality development. The size and scope of a development proposal determines the extent of the review process. As part of the development review process, zoning drainage, traffic, environmental considerations and infrastructure improvements are assessed, as well as a proposal’s consistency with the City’s Comprehensive Plan. Compliance is important for the protection of the public’s health and safety and the general livability of our community.
Over the years, there has been an increase in public participation in the development reviews. This enhancement has led to positive changes in citizen involvement during the Planning Board workshops and review process, as well as an overall improvement in the quality of development proposals. The changes require the development community to work with the impacted surrounding neighborhoods during the design development phase. Through a series of neighborhood meetings, communication between the groups offers an opportunity for the applicant to hear neighborhood concerns and to address any issues early on through quality design.
