The caucuses are coming!

The caucuses are coming!

First they consumed Iowa. Then they stretched across the cornfields to the east coast in New Hampshire. Now they're slowly making their way across the Nation...

Sweet are the uses of adversity

Sweet are the uses of adversity

Six for six. You read that right - 6 FOR 6! That was our tally for The League on Election Day. And, not only did we choose underdogs, but underdogs that became lightning rods.

You know you've made it when ...

You know you've made it when ...

So, here's the dope. The League hit a new zenith this year with its involvement in Election 2007. Hey, we know that in past years we may have been viewed as some radical punks, screaming into our megaphones and generally making noise, but not anymore.

The Portland League Hits A Home Run

With more than 300 people from Maine and beyond in attendance, The Portland League of Young Voters Education Fund's "Step Up to the Plate" event honored nine of Portland's leading social entrepreneurs, raised thousands of $$$$$, and entertained with Olympic Gold Medalist Seth Wescott and DJ Saylove.

Check out our new Rent G.R.E.E.N. campaign that is not only a pocketbook issue for young Portlanders: it also connects environmental stewardship, renters rights, economics and consumer issues.

The long-term campaign is based on individual action, information for renters and incentives for landlords that will increase the energy efficiency of Portland's rental stock.

Opportunity Maine, or How the League Made History

Opportunity Maine, or How the League Made History

We're damn proud of our partnership with Opportunity Maine

.  We made history, we made a law and we revolutionized the way states can deal with the problem of student debt and brain drain.

Focusing on the Now...on the Local

Focusing on the Now...on the Local

That's right - a lot of other youth groups aren't talking 'bout no 2007 election, but we are.  Instead of looking ahead to '08 in '07, we're focusing on the now and on the local: that's League-style.

Check out what Mainers will be voting on, what Portland specific races we're working on and ways to get involved in our favorite thing: building community through electoral organizing.

GROWing as an Activist

GROWing as an Activist

Have you read this article, written by Melanie from our Steering Committee, in last week's Maine Switch? Melanie started coming to the Real Deal last year and now she's been published, has a great new entry for her resume, a slew of new friends and is making Maine a better place to live.  Here's an excerpt:

I think the longing for a sense of community is an aspect of grassroots organizing -- the desire and willingness to work for a better community leads to the creation of a better world.

Each person's dedication to improving their area, whether it be through music, art, political activism, social service work or volunteering, will ensure long-term change.
