Support the Green Jobs, Green Savings Bill!

Finding a good job or reducing your carbon footprint is difficult in this economy--let alone doing both at the same time!

Unemployment, climate change, fossil fuel dependence…We've inherited an epic problem that we will be working to undo for the rest of our lives.

The good news is there are relatively simple and tangible solutions.  The League has teamed up with Opportunity Maine to create the New Energy Jobs Alliance, and focus on our Green Jobs, Green Savings Bill.

Next Wednesday, January 14th at 7pm the Portland School Committee will take public comment on the superintendent proposal to change how the Family Living Program is implemented.   The Family Living Program instructor for 4th and 5th grade would be moved to a full time Health class at Lincoln Middle School.  Classroom teachers and school social workers would be utilized to help implement the training but its been admitted that some of the curriculum may be lost in the transition.

Opportunity Nation

Opportunity Nation

A couple years ago, ME passed a policy called "Opportunity Maine". It offers tax credits and school loan repayment in return for a commitment from students to stay in state for 4 years post-graduation. This was developed both to help students pay for college and to curb the "brain drain" out of the state.

Opportunity Nation would be similar, in that it would help pay back (if not cover all) students' loans, in exchange for x number of years of national service following graduation. These young people would staff a new Peace Corp, Green Corp, Teaching Corp, Medical Corp (potentially Defense Corp)--essentially a New Deal Corp.

Hear about the Candidates--in their own words!

Hear about the Candidates--in their own words!

The League has a pretty grueling endorsement process... And one major part of that process is a detailed Candidate Questionnaire!

Well, here are the Candidates original questionnaires--learn all about where they stand, in their own words!

chillin' at Boru's after a hard day's work

5-for-5: the deets and feats!

That's right, you read that right: 5 for 5! All of our endorsed candidates won their Primary, and well, since this is our second full-win in a row, and it was our first time endorsing in a Primary, we're a little excited...!

We asked questions, they gave answers

We asked questions, they gave answers

Part of our long and arduous endorsement process is writing up elaborate and detailed questionnaires, and asking potential candidates to fill them out with their stance on Local, State, and National issues. Once our decisions are made, we make these questionnaires public--so, for your viewing pleasure, here are your Primary Candidate Questionnaires!

Hit the ground running!

Hit the ground running!

It's May, and do you know what that means? Soon it will be June, and soon it will be the JUNE PRIMARY... We here at the League have been simply run-run-running around to get everything in order for you to have the smoothest ride right on into your polling place. The Voter Guide is online, it's about to hit the streets, and now we present you with  your voting information! --Phew!--

Stop the budget cuts!

Maine CAN do better!

On March 12, over one thousand people showed up at the statehouse in Augusta to have a say about Governor Baldacci's proposed budget cuts, terrifying budget cuts that would affect imperative social services throughout the state . Among many others organizations, the League showed up and decried, "MAINE CAN DO BETTER!"

Robin and Melanie at the League Retreat!

The League Retreat

A few weekends ago, the Portland League took a Strategic Planning Retreat to make some short and long term decisions about where the organization should go next! We made some great progress, played some rockin' games, and took the time to really hash out the future of the League, specifically regarding '08. Scope out some pix from our adventures!
