We reviewed and discussed the vision statement.
We discussed the term “sustainable”. Sustainable transportation is a tool for sustainable economies.
We need a transportation system that does not rely on unsustainable sources of energy.
How much does pavement-based transportation cost?
The use of the word “residents” is limiting. We recommend removing the words “its residents”.
Should we change “meet environmental goals” to “environmentally sound solutions” in vision statement?
We moved on to discuss action items.
A suggestion was made to have safe, convenient integration of modes at point of meeting.
We discussed education regarding population, commuters, government
Legislation needed to address short term goals.
We need to increase demand/ridership for buses and train
We had some discussion about bus lanes vs. rail transit
Discussed cost of pavement. Some wanted to expand rail and buses (support all the ideas). Others recognized the limited resources and suggested we have to make choices regarding rail vs. buses pavement.
We also discussed increasing tax on fuel and using the funds for rail and bus service.
How can we promote carpooling beyond a ride to work? (i.e grocery shopping)
Should we be communicating with nearby cities and towns regarding mass transit?
How about having neighborhood associations coordinate community transportation and carpooling?
More bicycle education is needed for riders and drivers.
Property tax payers could be given one free bus pass when they pay their tax bill.
Sheila chosen to present our results to the larger group.
