Focusing on the Now...on the Local

'Cause it's never to early to talk about a local election

November 6th, 2007

That's right - a lot of other youth groups aren't talking 'bout no 2007 election, but we are.  Instead of looking ahead to '08 in '07, we're focusing on the now and on the local: that's League-style.

Voters across Maine will decide on four statewide questions:

do we want a Racino in Washington County?

should we extend lawmakers term limits from 4 to 6 terms?

and there's three bond questions: one for investment in higher education; one for stimulating growth in the technology sector; and one for ecological and heritage preservation.

Portland voters will also do some additional electing:

there is an at-large, citywide race for City Council and School Committee

District 3 residents will elect both a City Councilor and a School Cmte Rep

and we'll elect a Water Trustee, another citywide race.

What's the League gonna do 'bout the election?

We're going to give folks information about where to vote, what's on the ballot, how to vote early and all that stuff - check out the Secretary of State's website.

We're holding a Candidates Forum on September 11th at the Community Television Network on Congress Street.  We'll educate our live studio audience and broadcast to all Portlander's, allowing Leaguer's and the public at large to meet our candidates for office.

And you know, we're putting out super-fly Voter Guides and endorsing candidates who stand for good stuff - stuff like energy efficiency, investment in education and the arts and other things that Leaguer's are down with.  Our members decide who we endorse, so e-mail us to find out how you become a member

We'll be doing a lot more too...stay tuned.
