Higher Education

In recent years, a college education has grown increasingly out of reach for middle class Americans as costs spiral upward and financial aid dwindles.

According to the National Education Association (NEA), approximately 400,000 college-qualified high school graduates every year don't attend college because they can't afford it.  The NEA's also revealed that 39% of those in a national survey said they were forced to make budget cuts that directly impacted their quality of life in order to pay for college.  It seems that in the land of opportunity, opportunity is getting harder to come by.

We must invest in education for ourselves, our communities and our nation.  Education is increasingly a key issue in making the US competitive in a global economy.   Without affordable college costs, our nation's economic stability is threatened.

The League has a proven track record in advocating for easier access to higher education; in Maine, we passed the revolutionary Opportunity Maine bill, which eliminated most student debt for students who remain in Maine.

We believe that everyone should have the right to an affordable college education, and we will continue to mobilize communities and help pass legislation to make that right a reality.
