Green Jobs

"Green Jobs" seems to be the latest trendy catchphrase, so its no surprise that many might be unclear about what a green job is.  A green job is a job in any environmentally friendly industry that reduces pollution and supports sustainable energy, from solar panel installation to urban co-op farming. Green jobs can affect you in the following ways:

More Jobs

The League believes that the establishment of green jobs is not merely an environmental imperative, but an economic one as well. "Green-collar" jobs are one of the best means of revitalizing an ailing economy.  With proper leadership and government policies conducive to their growth, approximately three to five million green jobs can be developed within the next ten years. Those jobs can counteract the lack of opportunity that has permeated many cities that have lost manufacturing jobs--and provide a pathway out of poverty.

Stronger Communities

There are many sectors of our society that could immediately benefit from going "green". A green job is not just about installing solar panels or wind turbines!  These jobs are necessary for communities to be more independent of fossil fuels, but to have a healthy community we must also support sustainable housing, building materials, food systems and public transportation systems.  The overall reduction in energy and pollution costs will save money for ourselves and future generations.  Imagine the funds we could divert to other social needs such as education!

A Cleaner World

Air pollution and toxic waste levels are far more prevalent in lower-income areas of cities, as are the rates of asthma and other health problems. The League believes that everyone has a right to breathe clean air, drink clean water, and be safe from harm caused by hazardous materials. While we advocate for young people who live in polluted neighborhoods to organize and petition local politicians, we also realize that this isn't merely a local issue, and that lowering pollution by investing in clean and renewable energy will benefit everyone.

The opportunities and technologies are out there to make it all happen.
