Election Reform

The League is committed to fixing an election system which currently is tainted by big money, fraudulent election procedures and faulty electronic voting machines.  The result is a system which fails on multiple levels to protect every eligible voter's right to cast a ballot.

In addition, many low-income families, students, and other disadvantaged groups are routinely the victims of voter disenfranchisement due to suppressive laws that target such groups from voting and making an impact on an election.  For example, in Ohio 2004, polling places in lower-income neighborhoods (and likely Democratic voters) were understaffed and ill-equipped, which led to long delays and disenfranchisement. Voter ID laws, ostensibly designed to prevent fraud, actually disenfranchise many senior citizens, lower-income citizens and minorities.  This is the 21st century. Voter disenfranchisement should be a relic of the past.

The League continues to work with community organizations to ensure that voters are properly informed of their voting rights.  We support major election reforms such as campaign finance and instant run-off voting and are committed to fighting against unfair and unjust legislation that would keep people away from the polls.
