Affordable Housing

Along with the rise of economic pressures, millions of working Americans struggle to maintain their homes due to rising rents and property values.

Housing shortages impact communities in many ways, such as:  a decline in health of the community, the disenfranchisement of low to mid-income people, labor shortages, strained transportation systems and commuting times, and a rise in poverty.

Families shouldn't be increasingly forced to choose between paying the rent and groceries or healthcare.  Unfortunately, homelessness is also a growing issue.  According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, nationwide there is an absolute shortage of 2.8 million rental units affordable to the people with the lowest incomes.  In some areas, affordable housing is at the forefront of issues that protect communities of color and immigrant communities.

The League chapter in San Francisco is working with the Mission Anti-Displacement Coalition to include a community-based housing policy in the upcoming elections.  Fortunately, there are like-minded organizations and government agencies working to make sure that rents don't skyrocket and that new housing developments integrate adequate and affordable housing units
