Good Old Fashioned Organizing
Far away from the immigration battle in Arizona, the Portland League of Young Voters just passed an incredible milestone for immigrant rights. Will Everitt, our Maine Director, turned in over 5,000 local signatures to put legal immigrant voting rights on the November ballot.1
By Will's estimates, the Maine League - along with their partners - ended up personally contacting one in seven Portland voters. This is League organizing at its best: no bells and whistles, no national press coverage - just incredible women and men working 7 days a week to turn their ideals into legislation. I can't say it better than the Portland Press Herald: "The League of Young Voters has proved to be an influential force in city politics because of its ability to motivate its volunteer base."
But the struggle isn't over. The Maine League and their volunteers will have to work around the clock to keep voters engaged in this historic legislation. And to pull it off this Fall, they need your support.
Click here to donate $5, $25 or $50 today to protect the basic civic rights of legal immigrants!
We're committed to raising $5,000 to help Maine fund a new fulltime Communications Director to message this campaign. If just 100 people donate $50, the Maine League can send a signal across the nation that progressive Americans support and fight for our immigrant sisters and brothers! Please donate today.
And there's an even easier way to support our work this Fall: sign up to help our sister org, LYVEF, win $50,000 in Pepsi's August challenge!
If you're like me, you avoid high fructose corn syrup at all cost - but this $50,000 grant is the good kind of sweet! Signing up to be a daily voter is a free way to contribute to the incredible work that the League of Young Voters Education Fund and League of Young Voters are doing in 2010.
Sign up to help LYVEF win $50,000 to fund our voter registration and GOTV work this Fall.
peace
