Ohhhh! CAV youth get down at Mayfair protest.
With "Back to School" shopping in full swing, Mayfair's decision to change the Parental Guidance Required (PGR) policy to extend the time that teenagers can be in the mall reflects just how much buying power that Milwaukee youth really have. But it will take more than an hour to gain back young people's support. Mayfair will have to learn how to work with young leaders in the community that are more than capable of coming up with creative solutions to the problems that Mayfair encountered prior to them implementing the policy.
We’re not surprised that Mayfair Mall’s decision to discriminate against youth has caused a significant loss in their profits. As long as Mayfair Mall is unwilling to work with the young people in the community, they will not be able to gain back the lost trust of young folks.
What’s next for this campaign? This issue has reached national attention, with both Time Magazine and the television show The View addressing this problem. Young people continue to be organized around this issue, and display their power by spending their money in places where they won’t be harassed.
