Turning passion into action
Before joining the League, I always had a deep passion over social issues, but never really had the opportunity or the skills to organize a group on campus. When I hooked up with the League of Young Voters in San Francisco, that’s when I really started to liking the process of organizing, taking the initiative.
My experience with the League of Young Voters was fun and new. One of our first actions on campus was a film night. “Politics and Pizza” was the theme, in which we showed “The Ground Truth” -- a film about U.S. soldiers coming back home from the Iraq War. Powerful film. Over 30 students attended that night on March 8, 2007. We also registered new California voters that night, and in next year's coming elections they will be able to vote for our new President.
What I learned from being apart of the League of Young Voters is the experience of organizing a group of wonderful young people and creating an environment on campus that is committed to awareness and change in the community. The League is for anyone who wants to challenge themselves and others about the power of coming together collectively to make a positive change.
A shout out to Natasha Marsh: you challenged us in every way possible, and a big thank you for coming all the way from San Francisco to San Jose to meet with us every Friday to discuss next steps.
The League of Young Voters is committed to young people organizing around issues that are affecting communities all over the country. Always rep the League of Young Voters aka “The League of Pissed off Voters!”
