And we don't stop
Yeah ok, we're excited about 2008 elections too. But does that mean we would ignore the elections happening in 2007? Never. All year, every year, we just don't stop.
In fact you get some of the juiciest tomatoes in the "off-years." City councils, school boards, local measures... stuff that directly affects our communities. Local League affiliates around the country have worked hard to get all up in their local ballots, make endorsements, and turn out their friends and neighbors to the polls.
Check out a few examples from around the country:
- The League in Maine had a huge victory. It had been a vicious final week, with the League coming under attack by panicked industry lobbyists and entrenched political interests in Portland. They even targeted the League's endorsed candidates with a smear campaign. But the League's organized ground campaign and hard-earned respect carried the day. Their endorsed candidates went 6-for-6. Incredible. Over the last couple of years the League and it's allies have re-made the political landscape of Portland.
- In San Francisco, while the media had written off the "unimportant" election, the League knew that there were crucial issues at play like public transit, violence prevention, and clean politics. And they took to the streets to do what they do best. The League's "Pissed Off Voter Guides" were hotter than ever -- 10,000 voter guides flew off the press and into the hands of young voters in just 10 days. We couldn't print them fast enough!
- In New Mexico's October municipal election in Albuquerque, the NM League worked to get young, socially responsible voters out to the polls for the first election using the city’s public financing system which the League worked so hard for in previous elections. As they say in NM, in the “Land of Enchantment,” the days of “pay-to-play” politics are numbered!"
- TheBallot.org: the League's do-it-yourself voter guide site, theballot.org, received thousands of visitors in the last week, even for only a handful of elections, and continued to get positive attention for allowing everyday people to help their communities make informed votes.
All in all, not a bad day for what was supposed to be an unimportant, undercover, off-year election. But see, that's just how we roll.
All year, every year. And it's only going to get hotter in 2008. So sign up in that little box in the upper right and get down with us. Tell your friends too. And if you're feeling it, put your money where your mouth is and support this work. It's about to get crazy in 2008, and we're just going to keep smashing.
